The department of general agriculture, genetics and selection is one of the oldest departments of the faculty and was established in 1920 under the name "General agriculture". This department has played a great role in the development of agriculture in our country. The department, which has been operating under different names since its establishment, was headed by associate professors A.G. Orujov, M.R. Gulubayov, and from 1938 to 1972, Honored Scientist Professor Nikolai Malov. Later professors F.I Mammadov, F.H Akhundov, associate professors I.N. Huseynov, J. H. Jalilov, GM Nabiyev, J.A. Hajiyev, A.G. Ibrahimov headed it. Due to structural changes, the Department of Genetics and Selection (former head, Associate Professor F.H. Gurbanov) was transferred to the Department of General Agriculture.
At present, the department is headed by Doctor of Philosophy in Agrarian Sciences, Associate Professor, Professor of ADAU Aynur Oruj Hasanova.
During the leadership of Professor N.Malov, original work was carried out in the field of pre-sowing preparation for cotton and alfalfa planting on farms. Under his scientific guidance, more than 30 candidate and doctoral dissertations were defended.

At present, the department conducts topical and state-important scientific research. Thus, on the basis of a complex of agro-technological measures, work is being done to obtain highly ecologically clean products from agricultural crops and improvement of the agro-physical properties of the soil, as well as developing agrobiological and technical aspects of seed production for new varieties of agricultural crops.
With the transfer of selection and genetics to this department, the scope of scientific research has increased in recent years.
The department closely cooperates with the relevant departments of agrarian universities of many foreign countries (Russia, Turkey, USA, Spain, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Georgia, Ukraine, etc.). Therefore, scientific research in the field of ecological and precision farming systems, advice on the use of new devices to study the water-physical properties of soil is carried out with K.A. Moscow State Agrarian University named after Timiryazev.
Exchange of students and teachers with the Ege University of Turkey and Texas Agrarian University is carried out. Training and cooperation with the European Federation of Conservative Agriculture on new technologies in the field of cotton - Canned agriculture - No-till technology, scientific research in the field of climate change is done.
Exchange of experience on the effective organization of agrarian advisory services is carried out with Science and Production Center for Agriculture and Food Supply under the Ministry of Agriculture of Uzbekistan, Information and consulting service center of Tashkent State Agrarian University, Nexigol Mushovir Agro-Inform Center, and Israel State Agrarian Advisory Service.
The results of research work carried out at the department are applied in production. Thus, research is being conducted on farms in Goranboy, Agjabadi, Shamkir, Samukh, Zagatala, and other regions.
In order to assist in production, employees of the department visit farms, participate in seminars for farmers on the approbation of sown areas, analysis of seed quality, protection of soil fertility, provide agrarian advice to farmers in different regions, conduct trainings.
The teaching staff of the department consists of 19 people: (1 doctor of agricultural sciences, professor, 9 associate professors (2 professors of ADAU), 2 senior teachers, 7 assistants).

The department conducts research on the following topics:
- Acquisition of highly ecologically clean products from agricultural crops and improvement of agro-physical properties of soil on the basis of a complex of agro-technological measures with efficient use of lands.
- Modern ecological condition of Kur-Araz lowland and regularity of vertical distribution of soil types.
- Influence of different sowing methods and fertilizer norms on the economic value characteristics of cotton varieties.
- Gathering, studying and usage of initial materials to create sorts and hybrids of agricultural plants.
- Importance of coverlet sowing in effectively usage of soil, effect of optimalization of fertilizer norms on productivity and fertilization of soil.
- Design of efficient schemes of small-scale crop rotation for small-scale cotton farms.
