The Department of Biology (formerly Botany) was one of the first departments established in 1920 at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Baku Polytechnic Institute. The organizer and head of the department was the world-famous botanist, full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, academician Alexander Alfonsovich Grossheim. Later, professors N.A.Lebedev, in 1926-1937 professor of Polish origin M.V. Brzezitski led the department.During its activity, the department prepared 6 doctors of sciences, more than 60 candidates of sciences, about 100 masters.
From 1939 to 1980, the department was headed by Tutayuk Valida Khasbulat, an outstanding eastern scientist, doctor of biological sciences, professor, the first Azerbaijani woman, academician with phenomenal research ability.
After she was appointed director of the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan in 1957, the department (1957-1962) was headed by academician Alakbar Guliyev.
Academician V. Tutayuk headed the department from 1962 until the end of her life (1980).
Academician V. Tutayuk for the first time in Azerbaijan at this faculty conducted in-depth scientific work in the field of plant anatomy and morphology, cytology and phylogeny and created the Azerbaijan School of Plant Anatomy. She wrote the first textbooks “Anatomy and Morphology of Plants” (1958, 1967, 1979) in the Azerbaijani language. This textbook was later translated into Russian, Georgian and other languages.
During leadership of academician A.Guliyev as a head of the department he worked on the production of new varieties of clover, cotton and corn, using the method of obtaining experimental mutagenic forms of agricultural crops.
The department was later headed by Professor Vahid Guliyev (1980-1989), a graduate of the Moscow Agricultural Academy and Professor Adila Alizade (1989-1998).
About 100,000 herbarium funds collected at the department since the beginning of the last century are still preserved today. These herbariums have been scientifically identified and mainly were collected from the Kalbajar-Lachin area.
Since 1998, the department has been headed by Professor Zaur Israfil oglu Gumbatov, a student of academician V. Tutayuk.
Z. Gumbatov is the author of more than 250 scientific works, including textbooks, study guides and methodological programs.
His main research interests are plant anatomy and morphology, palynology, nature conservation, and ethnobotany.
Professor Z. Gumbatov for the first time conducted research on an SKAN electron microscope to clarify some of the conflicting structural elements in anatomical research, and introduced new terms in the science of plant anatomy.
He identified the type of Talysh Taxus (yews) that grew in Talysh and gave its botanical description. Z. Gumbatov is one of the famous biologists of our country for research and protection of conifers.
He is the coordinator of the Scientific Coordination Council of the Central Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the Caucasus region, the head of the Public Union "Center for Ecology and Ecological Control of Azerbaijan named after academician Hasan Aliyev" in the western region, vice president of the Azerbaijan Green Society.
The textbooks "Anatomy and Morphology of Plants", "Methods of Education and Research in Botany" and "Aquaculture", written by Z. Gumbatov, are now used in many universities and research centers of our country.
Professor Z. Gumbatov made scientific reports at international congresses held in several foreign countries.
The department of biology has been named after academician V. Tutayuk since 2014. The department has 3 scientific laboratories equipped with modern equipment: laboratories "Ultrastructural and biotechnological research", "Plant Physiology" and "Methods of teaching biology."
The department is conducting research on the following topics:
Bioecological features and introduction of strategically important wild and cultivated plants of Azerbaijan, research of medicinal, food, fodder important species, ethnobiological researches. Monitoring metabolic, physiological, microbiological processes occurring in plants, and studying the influence of meteorological factors on plants.
The Department of Biology is in close contact with the relevant departments of world famous universities.
The department invites specialists from different countries such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Turkey, Israel, Serbia, Germany, USA and cooperate with them.
The teaching staff of the department consists of 30 people: (1 professor, 12 associate professors, doctor of philosophy (2 professors of ADAU), 3 senior teachers, 14 assistants).
